Falling Film Evaporator — Overview
I. Working Principle
Feed liquid enters the heating chamber from the top through a proprietary adjustable film distributor, evenly distributing onto the inner wall of each heat exchange tube. Under gravity and secondary steam drag force, a continuous uniform falling film of 0.1–2 mm is formed. Low-pressure steam in the shell side heats the tube wall film, causing rapid boiling and vaporization as the film flows downward, instantly separating solvent into secondary steam and concentrated feed. The vapor-liquid mixture exits the bottom of the tubes into the separation chamber, where a high-efficiency demister intercepts entrained droplets. Purified secondary steam is sent to the shell-and-tube condenser for recovery, while solvent is stored for reuse. Concentrated material meeting the target specification is continuously discharged from the separator bottom, enabling fully automated continuous feeding, concentration and discharge. With no prolonged material retention on heating surfaces, the risk of localized overheating, scorching and active ingredient degradation is fundamentally reduced — especially suitable for foaming, heat-sensitive, low-viscosity pharmaceutical liquids.
II. Structure & Components
1. Vertical Shell-and-Tube Heating Chamber: Long tube bundle design with large heat exchange area and uniform film distribution. Shell-side sealed steam heating with stable temperature rise and high thermal efficiency — entire unit insulated to reduce heat loss.
2. Precision Film Distribution System: Top-mounted staged distributor with independent flow guidance per tube. Eliminates dry wall, flow deviation and film breakage, ensuring synchronous uniform film evaporation across all tubes.
3. Vapor-Liquid Separation & Demisting Chamber: Large-volume separation cavity with multi-layer corrugated demister components to effectively block liquid droplet carryover, improving extract yield and reducing solvent entrainment loss.
4. Condensation & Solvent Recovery Unit: High-efficiency shell-and-tube condenser with solvent receiving tank. Thorough cooling with water and ethanol solvent recovery rate ≥ 88%, enabling recycling and reuse.
5. Stable Vacuum Pump Unit: Water-ring vacuum pump continuously maintains negative pressure, lowering the feed boiling point for gentle low-temperature evaporation at 45–75°C.
6. Fully Automatic Feed & Discharge System: Sanitary-grade transfer pumps with interlocked level control for automatic refill and continuous discharge — no manual start/stop required.
7. Intelligent PLC Control & CIP Interface: PLC touch screen fully automatic control with real-time monitoring and storage of temperature, vacuum and feed flow. Pre-configured CIP interfaces for complete in-place cleaning with zero dead zones.
